A Tiffany and Co. brooch featuring the Vanderbilt sapphire stole the spotlight at the most recent Phillips auction in Geneva.
The piece, designed in the early 20th century, showcases a 42.68-carat sugarloaf Kashmir sapphire in an openwork scroll design and accented with old-cut diamonds. It surpassed its high estimate of CHF 1.2 million ($1.5 million) to bring in in CHF 2.9 million ($3.6 million) at the November 10 Geneva Jewels Auction: V, Phillips said Monday.
In total, the auction garnered CHF 13.7 million ($17 million), as 85% of lots sold. The Vanderbilt family collection saw a sale rate of 100%, with some lots fetching way above their high estimates.
