The gem testing laboratories have all developed technologies to detect and flag such stones. However, when it comes to small diamonds \u2014 which make up the bulk of the world\u2019s production \u2014 the technological problem is to be able to pick up even one or two synthetics from parcels of hundreds, if not thousands, of stones.<\/p>\n<h3>The Spectroscope<\/h3>\n<p>Detection rates of synthetics are high and improving every day. A&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Optical_spectrometer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">spectroscope<\/a><span>&nbsp;<\/span>is the name of the instrument on which most of this detection would be&nbsp;dependant.<span>&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Spectroscopy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spectroscopy<\/a><span>&nbsp;<\/span>plays a very important role in gemology. From the basic to the advanced spectroscopes, such as the Raman spectrometer, FTIR, UV-VIS-IR spectrometer, Fluorimeter, LIBS, spectroscopic instruments are essential to today\u2019s gemologist.<\/p>\n<p>Of these types, the FTIR or Fourier Transform Infra Red spectrometer is the suitable instrument for the detection of synthetics in parcels of very small diamonds, because the FTIR is able to simultaneously collect high spectral resolution data over a wide spectral range.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>With an FTIR Spectroscope, a gemological laboratory can:<\/strong><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li>Identify types of diamonds.<\/li>\n<li>Detect synthetic diamonds, emeralds and quartz.<\/li>\n<li>Detect heat treatment in corundum \u2014 the mineral of which rubies and sapphires are a variety.<\/li>\n<li>Detect fracture-filling in corundum.<\/li>\n<li>Detect resin filling in emeralds.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p> <umb-rte-block data-content-id=\"ce58dbea-c06f-43cf-b871-17ba6c5c22c2\"><\/umb-rte-block> <\/p>\n<p>Thus, the FTIR spectroscope could be very helpful in detecting and separating man-made and natural diamonds.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/rapaport.com\/trade\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/FTIR-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"FTIR spectroscope Image\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<h3>Experts Needed<\/h3>\n<p>But of course, the results are only as good as the competence and experience of the gemologists operating the equipment.
